Citrus County Detention Facility Overview

The facility is operated by CoreCivic, a private corrections company that has managed the jail since 1995. It is a multi-level security detention facility, which means it houses people across different custody levels rather than one. The population is mixed. It holds Citrus County pre-trial detainees and sentenced offenders, detainees and inmates for the U.S. Marshals Service, and sentenced offenders for the U.S. Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections. CoreCivic also lists reporting contacts for ICE detainees, so immigration holds can appear here too.

The jail is a 760-bed operation in two named buildings. The South Building opened in 1992 with 400 beds across four pie-shaped units, each holding six housing pods. The North Building opened for occupancy in 2007 and adds 360 beds across six pods of 30 two-person cells. An administrative building handles booking, food service, the canteen, libraries, the chapel, and the property room.

The facility is rated for 760 beds, a figure confirmed by both CoreCivic building reports and a 2025 federal securities filing. The Florida Department of Corrections tracks the average daily population in monthly county jail reports. The most recent reviewed report, from November 2024, put the average daily population at 686, which is roughly 90% of the rated capacity for that month.

The trend has moved up over recent reports. The average daily population sat at 584 in June 2023, then rose through the high 600s in 2024 as the county's own population grew. The incarceration rate held near 4.0 to 4.1 per 1,000 residents across those reports. The average daily population is a monthly average, not a live headcount, and it includes county, federal, and U.S. Virgin Islands custody held together at the same facility.

CoreCivic does not run a public web locator for this jail. So a lookup uses the sheriff's recent-arrest report for new bookings, then a phone call to confirm custody. For sentenced or federal inmates, you switch to the state or federal systems instead.

1. Open the CCSO Recent Arrest report and search it by last name for a booking in the last 10 days.
2. Call the facility at 352-527-3332 to confirm whether the person is still held and what can be released by phone.
3. Search the clerk's court system for filed charges and court dates once a case opens.
4. If the person was sentenced or is in federal custody, use the state Department of Corrections, the Bureau of Prisons, or the ICE locator as needed.

The federal side deserves its own note here. Because the jail holds people for the U.S. Marshals Service, a federal pre-trial detainee may not appear in the Bureau of Prisons locator, which lists sentenced federal inmates. The facility is in Lecanto, not at the sheriff's office in Inverness. Call before traveling for a visit or a records question, since intake and custody run on the facility's schedule.

Visiting Someone at the Citrus County Detention Facility

Visits are scheduled and limited. An inmate gets one visit day per week, up to four people per visit, and each visit runs two hours. Visits must be booked 24 hours ahead, and visitors must arrive 30 minutes early. A visitor cannot have been incarcerated within the last 365 days. The schedule below uses a report time before each visit window.

Bring a driver license, state photo ID, or passport, and follow the dress code, which requires sleeves and pants or a skirt that reaches at least the top of the knee. Only photo ID and car keys are allowed in the visitation area.

Mail, Phone, and Money at the Citrus County Detention Facility

Mail, phone, and deposits run through the facility and its vendors. A money order goes to a CoreCivic lockbox with the inmate's name and commissary number. Phone and tablet funds run through Securus, which needs the inmate's county ID number. Western Union also handles deposits in several ways. If you do not have the county ID or commissary number yet, call the jail first, because deposits can be rejected without it.

Intake at the jail runs 24 hours a day, every day. After an arrest, a person is transported to the facility and processed in. Intake records identity and property, takes a photo and fingerprints where required, and runs medical, mental-health, and safety screening. Screening materials include risk assessment that can shape housing and program placement. The person is then classified and assigned to a pod or dorm in the South or North Building.

About the Citrus County Detention Facility

CoreCivic has served Citrus County for nearly 30 years, according to a facility article published in April 2024. The jail focuses on short-term, education-driven programming because of the high turnover. Programs include High School Equivalency preparation with onsite testing, self-guided anger management, faith-based services, the Go Further reentry planning program, and life-skills classes. The facility also takes part in local community events through the year.

Community ties run through the facility's calendar as well. CoreCivic lists involvement in local blood drives, the Key Training Center Telethon, an American Cancer Society Walk-A-Thon, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SERTOMA, the Chamber of Commerce, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and several local civic clubs.
